The Energy Box was trialled for the first time in the field in August of 2019, in Murambi Village, Northern Province, Rwanda. Murambi was chosen as a village with a good mix of houses with SHSs, houses without SHSs and businesses in close proximity.

With help from engineering students based in Rwanda, focus groups and workshops were conducted, as well as an individual tutorial was given to each participant with the system itself once it was installed in their homes. There was one trained local person in the village to help with immediate technical difficulties, while users were given simple instruction manuals.
